Yes Hillcrest has been good in baseball. If you look at the beginning of the MAIS Parklane and Humphreys used to play for it every year. Oak Hill was pretty competitive in basketball and football in the late 80s. Tommy Nester I believe was the football coach.
No sir. I am not sure what association John I. Hurst has with SMCC. John I. Hurst's daughter taught me Geometry in high school. That is another master hire of Mr. Swindle. Mrs. Hurst came to Parklane from Stanford. They were from the Summit area. Coach Hurst is from Louisiana near Clinton. That is one reason why the rivalry with them and Silliman is so intense.
She thought of me as the, class clown as she put it, when class first started. Then one day she found out who my sister was. We never had another issue. I was not the neatest person; so I remember how proud I was when I got a check + on my Geometry notebook check.
John Hurst was the coach and principal at Pike Co. AHS back in the 1920's and 30's, before it was renamed Summit HS . I believe he went on to SWJC after that since the field is named in his honor. I have often wondered if the two were related because of common attributes and surnames.
I spent many a day on that football field as an equipment manager in the mid 80s. We had a player from Centreville named Denny Hughes. I think he still may hold some MAIS records in track. He was a really good athlete.
Prep & Centreville in football.
You can’t argue with those choices. Both have been very successful for a long time.
It's been along time, but Live Oak was pretty good in baseball - Hillcrest Christian may have the best resume in that sport.

I was very close to the Centreville football program in the mid to late 90s. I will write about it in my blog today.
Was Coach Hurst's father the gentleman who SWCC's field is named after - John Hurst?

Mr. Hurst was one of the educators that I most admired and respected. His daughter was the best math teacher ever. Thanks for the special memories.
