Did not see him play in high school but I always heard Seth Smith was a stud in all three sports at hillcrest. I do know he had a really good MLB career
I saw many good athletes during my 50+ years in the educational arena and I agree with Ealey, Carruth, Coghlan, Calhoun, and Smith as probably the best plus my two sons at Parklane--Mike and Mark. (IMO)..may be a little prejudice, ha!
i I did not get to see Mike. I did get to see Mark. He was one if the best shooters I have seen. One of my biggest regrets was my 8th grade year not going to overall. I remember telling my dad that Prep was going to blow us out. I remember how well he said Mark played and we lost by 1 or 2. Don’t sell Christy short she could shoot the ball also.
I I did not see him either. I did see David Hayman from Hillcrest play in the all star game in baseball. The story goes he gets off the boat from his senior cruise gets to the game in like the 4th inning. We here what sounds like fun shots in the batting cage. if Irene we right he went yard later.
David Rula and Whit Hughes from Prep were impressive in basketball in the 80s, so was Chris Thurman from BA. Will Overstreet from prep was an impressive athlete. He played in college for Tennessee And in the pros for the Falcons. He also ran first leg in Prep’s 4x100 relay And he was a d-lineman.
Ridley was pretty snazzy. I remember watching that championship game in 2003 and Heidelberg's Coach Lewis had two defenders cover him M2M the entire game - played 9 vs 10 the rest of the field... and won - but Ridley STILL caught 14 passes, being doubled teamed every play, and both (if memory serves) of Trinity's TD's.
Another cat was named Josh Wren who rushed for something like 5600 yards at Central Hinds. Just a little guy who had some Barry Sanders mojo.
Mary Kathryn Govero was the girl from Mt. Salus - I saw her TRIPLE-TEAMED and still scored 30+ . Amazing.
And speaking of girls basketball there was a girl who (I think) played for Delta Acad. named Lindsey Roy... she tore her ACL right before her senior season playoffs began and played anyway with a brace.
AT this time I would say Jerrion Ealey. Growing up I would say football Paul Ott Carruth, basketball Ken Coghlan, and baseball Jeff Calhoun.

Also the girl that went to Mt Salus can’t remember her name.

Good one I forgot about Ridley. I heard about the girl from Mt Salus.
Tammy Newton was a good girl’s basketball player. Isn’t she in the State sports hall of fame.
